With all of the extra weight and reduced aerodynamics, expedition-laden vehicles commonly experience reduced gas mileage. Between carrying the hundreds, sometimes thousands, of pounds of additional gear required for a vehicle-dependent expedition and the frequent use of wind dragging roof racks, tents and bull bars, it's not unusual for petrol powered vehicles to get single digit mileage, while diesel mileage can dip below 20 mpg. This loss of fuel efficiency dramatically cuts down on the cruising range of your vehicle.
Often times on expedition, fuel sources can be infrequent and unreliable. In some remote areas of the world it's not uncommon to go hundreds of miles between fuel stops. With the reduced fuel efficiency of an expedition vehicle, bringing supplemental fuel is an absolute necessity.
When planning for fuel consumption on a trip, a good guidline is to bring at least 30% more fuel than you will need to make it for the longest leg of your journey. This extra fuel provides a valuable margin of error in case you have higher than average fuel consumption, take a less direct route than originally anticipated, or your next fuel depot has bad quality fuel.
The last thing that you want to do is have to abandon your vehicle in the remote corners of a desert because it runs out of fuel.
The solution to this problem is to increase your fuel carrying capacity. This can be accomplished in one of two ways-the first is the fitment of an extended range fuel tank, such as those made by Long Ranger . These tanks are advantageous because the fuel sits low, typcially at chassis level, and it doesn't take up storage space. All Scepter MFCs feature three separate handles, each one capable of supporting the weight of a full jerry can. Each leak-proof, screw on cap is attached by a color keyed check strap. Diesel check straps are yellow, with a large "D" embossed on them. Petrol check straps are safety red with a large "P" embossed. These colors are in accordance with DOT regulations for transportation of flammable fluids.
One of the annoying characteristics of the classic style jerry cans is the "glug, glug" nature by which the fuel pours out of the can. Scepter's innovative solution to this was to make their military fuel cans self-venting when they are poured. At the 12 o'clock position of the fuel can, there is a venting hole connected to a tube which travels to the back of the can. This breather tube, allows the can pressure to equalize while it is being poured, helping to ensure a smooth pour from the fuel can to your fuel tank.
The Scepter Petrol Fuel Cans are commonly available in four colors: red, blaze orange, OD green and American Sand. Each variation is identical with regards to materials and construction. The only difference is color, with different colors appealing to different uses. For Military use, the OD green and American Sand cans are the preferred choice, due to their subtle color allowing them to stand out less during tactical use.
The rectangular shape of the Scepter Military Fuel Cans allows them to be easily stacked and palletized. While it is highly unlikely that most consumers will be carrying a pallet load of jerry cans with them on an expdition, it allows for the mazimization of available storage space.
